Collaboration 002: Angus Paul Syrah 2021
STYLE: Red
COUNTRY & REGION: South Africa, Stanford Foothills
VINTAGE: 2021
ABV: 14%
VOLUME: 75cl
THE WHAT:
This is 100% Syrah from the Stanford Foothills in the Walker Bay. Syrah is a grape typically known for its spicy characteristics, both on the nose and on the palate. These vineyards here sit in close proximity to the ocean, and the Syrah here thrives in the moderate temperatures that are regulated by the cool currents. So you have this fun mash up of dark black fruit, black pepper and spice. If you're a fan of Northern Rhone, then this won't disappoint.
Some of the wines you'll receive are in clear bottles, and others are in the traditional dark green. Don't overthink it.
THE WHO:
Angus Paul is is probably one of the most exciting winemakers we've spent time with. He defines cool, calm and collected, and has a wisdom beyond his years. He speaks with a humble confidence that we can't help but find incredibly inspiring. His wines are low-intervention in style, but clean and focused in the glass. Ok ok, we'll stop swooning over him now.
THE WHY:
Angus makes wines under his own label, but also does a little bit of contract winemaking. That means he produces some wine for other people's projects. This Syrah was one of them, and when the buyer for the wine fell through, Angus was stuck with around 800L of wine that needed a new home. Sounded like something right up the Wasted Wine Club alley.
THE TUNES:
You always need good music with good wine. Our pairing playlist is courtesy of the man, Richard Cossins of Flawd wine bar and Higher Ground in Manchester. We affectionately call him the Chief Vibes Officer. Click the link, and you'll see why.
