Cinsaut is a stalwart of the South African trade that’s finally getting the recognition it deserves. Please pop it in the fridge and drink it with a slight chill.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTHE WHO:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlex McFarlane is one of the most exciting young winemakers in the Cape at the moment. She makes her wines out of a cellar in the Hemel-en-Aarde. These are fine wines which are focused, polished, and pretty beautiful drinking experiences. And they generally tend to punch way above their weight. Alex focuses on what she calls South Africa's heritage varieties: grapes that showcase the rich cultural landscape of the wine trade, and that have very much shaped what we now know the Cape wine lands to look like today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTHE WHY:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCovid-19 had a devastating impact on the wine industry in South Africa in 2020. The government imposed prohibition on the sales and purchases of alcohol lasted most of the year, and many producers were left sitting on surplus wine that they were unable to sell. It doesn't always have to be treated like Cabernet Sauvignon, and Angus shows us that. Pinotage's parents are Cinsault and Pinot Noir, two grape varieties that produce light and delicate wines. And so why shouldn't we treat Pinotage the same way. This is made using Stellenbosch fruit, and the wine is light, crunchy, and the type of red that is best served with a slight chill on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTHE WHO:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAngus Paul is is probably one of the most exciting winemakers we've spent time with. He defines cool, calm and collected, and has a wisdom beyond his years. He speaks with a humble confidence that we can't help but find incredibly inspiring. His wines are low-intervention in style, but clean and focused in the glass. Ok ok, we'll stop swooning over him now.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTHE WHY:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAngus makes a Pinotage in his own range of wines, and in the 2021 vintage, there was a single barrel that went rogue. Typically, his own Pinotage is driven by pure, candy-floss and bright red fruit characteristics, and this barrel showed with a slightly wilder and more high tone edge to it. So he made the the strategic decision to keep it separate from the main bottling run, without a clear plan of what to do with it down the line. The grapes are whole bunch, natural fermented in a semi-carbonic way, simply meaning that there is a lot of freshness and vibrancy retained in the final bottling. This is a wine brimming with drinkability that we believe pairs perfectly with the smoky, bold and meaty flavours of the SMOKESTAK menu. We suggest drinking this with a slight chill on it. This is a rural and slow moving part of wine country, so don't expect shiny tasting rooms and fancy estates. Here, the focus is all about the farming, and all the frills and fluff of established appellations like Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are seldom seen. Jurgen makes his wines with a super light touch, rather allowing the fruit to express itself in the most authentic way possible by opting not to work with additions or manipulations in the cellar. His Intellego wines are generally regarded as some of the best being made in South Africa, and he has become a real source of inspiration and mentorship to many of the new producers starting their journey. He also happens to be one of the nicest humans you'll ever meet, and that counts for a lot too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTHE WHY:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGlobal trends tell us that people are either spending less on wine, or simply just consuming less, full stop. It means that the more savvy wine producers out there are beginning to explore new avenues for their projects, and are also seeking out the right partnerships to work with that can further communicate their farming and winemaking efforts to a new audience. Jurgen happened to have a small amount of surplus wine from his 2023 vintage, and the Wasted Wine Club x SMOKESTAK collaboration felt like the right fit for him in terms of concept and ethos for a fun bottling that allowed him to use this excess and share his journey. Not only does it mean cross pollinating on brands, but for him it means it also puts his wines in front of new drinkers in a new space. Here, it thrives in the similarly hot and dry climate north of Cape Town. It's a region where one is able to farm with less (or without) chemical sprays far easier, simply because the disease pressures here are significantly lower due to the arid conditions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTHE WHO:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAdriaan van Zyl is a young producer making wine in the Swartland in South Africa. He's got some damn good pedigree, having worked under Jasper Wickens of Swerwer wines, and more recently, the pioneers of natural wine in South Africa, Craig and Carla Hawkins of Testalonga in the Banditskloof, where he finds himself today. He is a passionate farmer, with a strong focus on organic and sustainable farming, and speaks with a deep knowledge and an infectious passion for the vines he tends to.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTHE WHY:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe fruit for this wine came from a vineyard block on the Paardeberg which belonged to a farmer by the name of Franziska, who approached Adriaan towards the end of harvest with a dilemma. She'd spent an entire growing season pouring her efforts into producing the grapes, and she now couldn't find a buyer for them. It's a reflection of a bigger problem plaguing wine markets currently, but it presented Adriaan with an opportunity to work and experiment with a grape that he had no prior experience with.
